BEVARA DESIGN HOUSE - PRESS RELEASE
BEVARA DESIGN HOUSE PROMOTES SUSTAINABLE FURNITURE
San Francisco, CA—When the owners of furniture wholesaler and importer Pangea Imports decided that they wanted to create a company that drew solely from sustainable materials, they launched Bevara Design House. The idea was simple: provide modern, lasting, and affordable furniture that is simultaneously well-designed and environmentally conscious. Sustainability would dominate every step of the manufacturing and distribution process—from concept and materials to execution and retail delivery. Now, that idea has become reality, with Bevara getting ready to offer its first pieces, all made from plantation-grown teak, in the next few months. The company also recently collaborated with Wal-Mart.com and CCA (California College of the Arts) to help curate the first of an ongoing series of classes on sustainable furniture at the college.
Husband-and-wife team Erik and Stacy Jorgensen first got involved in furniture design through their interest in textiles while backpacking through Asia. In Laos, they discovered two women’s weaving cooperatives—recognized by the U.N. for preserving Lao culture and improving the lives of women in the region—and brought their handicraft to stateside retailers. Shortly afterwards, Pangea Imports was born, and over the next several years, Stacy and Erik grew the company from the ground up, eventually working with large national retailers, such as Walmart, Expo Design Center, Ethan Allen, Costco, TJ Maxx, and Marshalls.
Then, earlier this year, the duo founded the more personal Bevara Design House out of corresponding desires to respond to the realities of a depleted environment and to reflect Erik and Stacy’s own design and furniture needs as new parents. The word “bevara” literally means “preserve” or “protect” in Swedish and speaks clearly to the company’s mission to work in harmony with the world’s resources. Bevara’s furniture is also geared specifically toward functionality and practicality within the everyday context of homes populated by young families. As both the entrepreneurial and creative minds behind the venture, Stacy and Erik are focused on forging a business model that makes sense financially, while taking the environment into account, as well as the very personal nature of home furniture.
“It’s very important for us to recognize that, while furniture has to look good and feature efficient and impeccable design, it also has to last and hold up to the rigors of daily life,” says Stacy. “In an immediate sense, furniture has to withstand our children, but in a much larger sense, it has to be manufactured in a way that won’t compromise their futures.”
Set to hit the market mid-summer, Bevara is excited to be counted among a rapidly growing sustainability movement in not just design, but all business sectors.
Stacy adds, “We’ve been inspired to put a good deal of ourselves in this company, and hopefully, others will be inspired, too.”
